Fitness: Can I do this tour?

It is very important that customers understand that a reasonable level of fitness is required for all tours.

The areas in which we operate vary greatly in  terrain and weather conditions. Travellers may be required to undertake walking experiences up to 4 hours in duration in challenging conditions. Travellers must be aware that depending on which region the tour is visiting  & the southern hemisphere weather season in which you are travelling, you could encounter extremes of heat ( 40C+) or cold (-5C).

By law it is required that customers advise Real Kiwi Adventures or our travel partners in New Zealand of any pre-existing medical conditions &/or Dietary conditions before they join the tour. Customers may also be asked at time of each tour commencement to sign a liability waiver.

Travellers are requested to contact us on: in relation to all medical or dietary issues.

Accommodation: Camping and Cabins

Stay in some of the most stunning locations in New Zealand by lake, mountains, oceans and rivers. Wake up to amazing views and sleep under the starry skies with camping and cabin options.

Tents are included in the price but you can upgrade to cabins for a small fee. In the most beautiful and remote locations upgrades aren’t available but if the weather isn’t suitable alternatives will be found.

Spend 3 nights in hostels when visiting the cities (not included in trip price but your guide will make a booking for you in a great hostel ideal for exploring the city).

Single travellers will be paired in a 3 person tent with 1 other person of the same sex, similar age or you can upgrade to a single tent for a small fee.

Vehicle: Mini coach with up to 30 seats – maximum group size 24

  • ^ Single travellers will be paired in a tent with a person of the same sex or can upgrade to their own tent for $85
  • Cabin upgrades are available most nights for a small fee, payable on the day. When staying in our more remote and picturesque campsites upgrades are not available but alternatives will be found in the event of inclement weather.
  • Optional bicycle hire for the duration of the tour is $200 (subject to change)
  • Customers may bring their own bicycle and will be charged a handling fee of $95
  • Sleeping bag hire is $60
  • This tour is recommended for persons 18 years and older however requests for younger participants will be considered on a case by case basis.

Day 1 – Queenstown

We depart Queenstown in the afternoon and head towards our camp beside a tranquil lake in nature’s paradise. (D)

Day 2 – Queenstown to glacier country via Mt Aspiring National Park

This morning you have the choice to jet boat through Mt Aspiring National Park or cycle or bus through Haast Pass with views of the Southern Alps. Your guide will take you on short walks through rainforest, passing by the waterfalls and pools of the wild West Coast. After a picnic lunch we head to glacier country and set up camp for the night in the alpine village of Fox Glacier. (B,L,D)

Day 3 – Fox Glacier to Okarito Beach

Spend the morning taking in the wonderful scenery before an optional guided walk, heli-hike or ice climb on the spectacular Fox Glacier. After your glacial adventure you can opt to cycle or walk around Lake Matheson before we head up the coast to Okarito Beach. Here we will set up camp and relax by the fire with breathtaking views all around us. (B,L,D)

Day 4 – Okarito Beach to Paparoa National Park

Head out early this morning for a walk to try and spot a Kiwi bird in the wild. Take a visit to Bushmans Museum before we head to Hokitika and its famous Greenstone factories. In the afternoon take a coastal ride or walk through native forest before travelling to Paparoa National Park to see the famous Pancake Rocks. After sunset explore the secluded glow worm caverns before settling into camp for the night. (B,D)

Day 5 – Paparoa National Park

Wake up to a delicious pancake breakfast and spend the day exploring this dramatic national park with walks and cycle tracks galore. You will also have the opportunity to river kayak should you so wish. Depending on the tides you will also get the chance to view the explosive ocean blow holes. Settle down into our magnificent camp for a second night. (B,L,D)

Day 6 – Paparoa National Park to Abel Tasman National Park

Today we travel through Buller Gorge to arguably New Zealand’s best national park – Abel Tasman. Choose to skydive, hang glide, fly an aerobatic plane or cycle the golden sand bays to Marahau. We highly recommend an optional overnight on a boat moored in the heart of the national park. (B,D)

Day 7 – Abel Tasman National Park

The day is yours today to explore the national park whether by sailing, kayaking, cycling or walking. Whatever your activity, we return to camp on the park’s doorstep. (B,L)

Day 8 – Abel Tasman National Park to Wellington via Marlborough

Travel to Nelson with a coastal cycle option on Tasman’s Great Taste Trail. Explore the Marlborough wine region with a chance to taste the world famous wines. In the afternoon we take a scenic ferry to Wellington (cost included). Accommodation is not included tonight however we will help with booking you a hostel perfect for exploring the city. (B)

Day 9 – Wellington to New Plymouth

Spend the morning exploring Wellington before we depart at 11am. We travel the Kapiti Coast past the magnificent Mount Taranaki where there is an optional short coastal cycle or walk. We set up camp tonight in beautiful native gardens in the heart of New Plymouth which has some great dining out options. (No meals included)

Day 10 – New Plymouth to Auckland

We head off early this morning to the limestone wonderland of Waitomo Caves. Opt to go blackwater rafting or cave walking. After a picnic lunch we travel to Auckland for a taste of big city life Kiwi style! Accommodation is not included tonight but we’ll help you find an ideal hostel. (B,L)

Day 11 – Auckland to Bay of Islands

After a departure mid-morning we head to the golden beaches and warm waters of the Bay of Islands via beautiful Urtiti Beach. Here you can use the complimentary boogie boards to catch some waves or simply relax on the sand. After a visit to the local town of Paihia we enjoy a mangrove walk to thundering Haruru waterfalls. You can then cycle or bus to our riverside camp before enjoying a Maori concert and Haka – the famous Maori dance – in the evening. (D)

Day 12 - Bay of Islands

Wake up to a hearty pancake breakfast and then spend the day exploring these magnificent islands. Choose from a day trip to Cape Reinga, sailing between the islands, swimming with dolphins, paddling a traditional Maori kayak known as a Waka or diving the region’s famous dive site the Rainbow Warrior. There are also plenty of treks and bike tracks to explore. Settle into our riverside camp for a second night. (B,L,D)

Day 13 - Bay of Islands to the Hibiscus Coast

Today you may opt to cross to the giant dunes of Opononi for beach fun and optional sand boarding or cycle or bus to Waipoua Forest – home to giant Kauri trees and great short walks. In the afternoon we travel to the Hibiscus Coast and set up camp near thermal pools and water slides. (B,L,D)

Day 14 – Hibiscus Coast to Auckland

Enjoy a relaxing breakfast before returning to the “City of Sails” for the end of your tour. (B)
