Day 1 - Auckland to Hahei (Coromandel)

Our coastal exploration starts today as depart from Auckland and venture south east to famous Cathedral Cove on the Coromandel Peninsula. Only accessible by foot or boat, you'll see some of New Zealand's most heavenly scenery at this stunning spot.

It's then onto Hot Water Beach, a special surf beach where you can dig yourself your own personal warm water bath in the sand (tide dependent). We spend the afternoon in the area, allowing time for a kayaking tour (complete with a unique cappucino machine onboard the lead kayak!) (own expense) before a delicious BBQ dinner. (D)

Activities included: Walk to Cathedral Cove, dig your own hot bath at Hot Water Beach
Optional activities: Cathedral Cove Kayaks

Day 2 - Hahei to Rotorua
Today we learn more about Māori culture as we journey to Rotorua, arriving about midday. The afternoon is free for you to partake in a range of optional activities, including a visit to Hobbiton (at own expense).

In the evening you will be treated to a fantastic cultural experience at Tamaki Māori Village. Discover Māori art, ancient rituals and traditions, an interactive cultural performance and feast on a delicious hangi - a traditional Māori way of cooking food in a pit with heated stones.

We spend the night in our central city accommodation. (B,D)

Activities included: Cultural experience with traditional hangi meal, kapa haka (Maori song and dance) and interactive cultural performance
Optional activities: Visit Hobbiton, white water rafting, Zorbing, the luge

Day 3 - Rotorua to Whakahoro
As well as being a cultural centre, Rotorua is famous for its geothermal attractions such as mud pools, geysers and hot springs. We visit some mud pools before discovering the powerful Huka Falls - rushing rapids squeezing through a narrow gorge and spilling over a 20-metre cliff.

Our next stop is the award-winning Blue Duck Station in Whakahoro. The beauty of this 5,200 acre high country farm is that it is not only a working sheep and cattle station but an environmental conservation leader too. The station's owners have developed a fantastic project to help increase numbers of endangered native New Zealand species including the Blue Duck or (Whio in Māori). Learn about their important efforts on a 4WD bush safari and farm adventure where you'll also get to witness some pretty spectacular scenery and the remains of intriguing local history.

Our dinner tonight is prepared using local produce. (B,D)

Activities included: Visit Huka falls, 4WD eco-wilderness farm adventure

Day 4 - Whakahoro to National Park
Yet another special day awaits us as we venture into the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tongariro National Park. Here you will get the chance to do what has been voted one of the world's best one-day walks, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Trek by volcanic peaks, vast craters and awe-inspiring turquoise lakes on one of the most dramatic and spectacular treks in the country. If the 19.4 kilometre journey isn't for you, then you can opt for a shorter, easier walk in the park or visit the Volcanic Centre Museum (own expense). (B,D)

Activities included: Tongariro Alpine Crossing and transfers, or Taranaki Falls walk and Tawhai Falls (Gollum’s Pool)

Day 5 - National Park to Wellington
After an energetic yesterday we take things relatively easy as we make our way to the capital of New Zealand, Wellington. To introduce you to 'Wellywood' we embark on an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at the studio responsible for Hollywood blockbusters such as The Hobbit, Lord of The Rings and Avatar, at Weta Workshop.

Wellington has been nicknamed the "coolest capital in the world" by Lonely Planet due to its lively arts scene, great shopping, craft beer breweries and vibrant café culture.

The afternoon is yours to check out any of these great features or some other attractions we recommend including the Te Papa National Museum, botanical gardens or going for a wander down Oriental Parade. (B)

Activities included: Weta Workshop tour

Day 6 - Wellington to Auckland
Today is an express journey from Wellington to Auckland. We arrive in Auckland in the late afternoon where your guide will drop you at central accommodation. (We don't recommend any onward travel on this day in case of unforeseen delay). We hope you have had the time of your life in the wonderful Aotearoa. (B)
