Fitness: Can I do this tour?

It is very important that customers understand that a reasonable level of fitness is required for all tours.

The areas in which we operate vary greatly in  terrain and weather conditions. Travellers may be required to undertake walking experiences up to 4 hours in duration in challenging conditions. Travellers must be aware that depending on which region the tour is visiting  & the southern hemisphere weather season in which you are travelling, you could encounter extremes of heat ( 40C+) or cold (-5C).

By law it is required that customers advise Real Kiwi Adventures or our travel partners in New Zealand of any pre-existing medical conditions &/or Dietary conditions before they join the tour. Customers may also be asked at time of each tour commencement to sign a liability waiver.

Day 1: Auckland to Paihia
Departing Auckland at 7:30am we head north to the stunning Bay of Islands. During the journey we will teach you about the rich local European and Maori history of the region. We stop to marvel at the giant Kauri trees that populate the region, some reaching up to 50 metres high. We arrive in Paihia, where you have the afternoon free to explore this charming seaside town. There are plenty of coastal walks in Paihia and lots of colourful bird life.
Accommodation: Hostel along from the beach in Paihia

Day 2: Paihia to Cape Reinga and back
Today you travel to the very tip of New Zealand, the spiritually significant Cape Reinga. Visit 90 Mile Beach, try dune surfing and see the clashing of 2 oceans. This is where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. Sample some of the best fish and chips around on your way back to Paihia.

Day 3: Paihia to Auckland
This morning we will do the famous ‘Hole in the Rock’ cruise and make an island stop in the bay. Keep an eye out for dolphins and other marine life. We depart in the afternoon to head back to Auckland.

Day 4: Auckland to Hahei
We will depart Auckland in the morning and make our way south to the Coromandel Peninsula, via the old colonial town of Thames. Mid-afternoon we will settle into our accommodation in Hahei before heading to the beautiful Hot Water Beach, where (depending on the tide) you can dig your own natural spa in the sand.

Day 5: FREE day in Hahei
Today you have a full day to spend at your leisure, and embrace the laid back lifestyle of Coromandel. Watching the sunrise on the beach and a scenic walk to Cathedral Cove are great ways to start the day with stunning views, or you want something different you can kayak to the Cathedral Cove. There are also glass bottom boat tours through the nearby marine reserve throughout the day.

Day 6: Hahei to Raglan
We will leave Hahei early to travel towards the beautiful Waikato River. Then head on to the world-renowned Raglan surf beach, complete with cow spotting and a scenic walk to the breathtaking Bridal Veil Falls. You will have the option in the afternoon to chill out on the beach or go hard surfing the waves in this funky beachside boutique town.

Day 7: Raglan (via Waitomo) to Rotorua
Our day starts at 8am when we depart Raglan. We will head towards the remote town of Waitomo to explore its famous caves and spot glow-worms. We then carry on towards our destination for the night, Rotorua. Here, you have the option to spend the afternoon touring the Hobbiton Movie Set or exploring the popular tourist town.

Free Activities: Walk around Ruakuri Reserve, Waitomo Valley Caves walk.

Day 8: Rotorua to Lake Aniwhenua
The morning in Rotorua is all yours! This town offers many adventure activities, so see what you can find. We will depart Rotorua at midday and drive into the picturesque area of Lake Aniwhenua, our destination for the night. We will meet a local Maori guide, who will take us to visit the sacred sites of Lake Aniwhenua. We will also meet a local Marae, who will demonstrate a traditional welcoming, before we settle for afternoon tea. Tonight, we feast on a traditional Hangi dinner at our lakeside accommodation. (D)

Day 9: Lake Aniwhenua to Whakahoro

After breakfast we will depart and head to Taupo to see the amazing Huka Falls. For those of you wanting a thrill, there is skydiving available here! At 10am we are on the road again and make our way to a 5,200-acre high country farm called Blue Duck Station. This farm is both a working station and a leader in environmental conservation. After settling into our accommodation, we will spend the evening learning more about the special region of Whakahoro. (B)

Included activities: Walk around the truly amazing property at Whakahoro and take in the lush scenery, walk to the Kaiwhakauka waterfall, enjoy your hosts’ hospitality and stories on the local wildlife and history.

Day 10: FREE day in Whakahoro
Today is a free day for you to explore. Try your hand at horseback riding, clay pigeon shooting, kayaking, and a night you can relax and stargaze. There are also many farming and conservation activities that will keep you busy during the day around the Blue Duck Station.

Day 11: Whakahoro to National Park
We have an early start, departing Whakahoro at 6am. We will head to the Tongariro National Park, a World Heritage Site that is home to active volcanoes. We will then have the opportunity to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing – this is regarded as one of the world’s best day walks. Take in the breathtaking scenery as you walk around the base of ‘Mt Doom’ from the Lord of the Rings films. Make sure your camera is fully charged, you won’t want to miss any of the photo opportunities today!

Free activities: Taranaki Falls walk, visit the Volcanic Centre.

Day 12: National Park to Wellington
This morning we are departing at 8:30am. We pass through the cities of Ohakune, Taihape and Bulls, on our way to New Zealand’s beautiful capital city, Wellington. Make use of your afternoon here by walking along the picturesque waterfront, wandering around the shops and cafes on the popular Cuba Street, or visit Te Papa, the Museum of New Zealand.
Accommodation: Central city hostel
Free Activities: Walk Oriental Parade, head up Mt Victoria for fantastic views, visit Te Papa National Museum.

Day 13: Wellington to Marahau
We will check-in to our Bluebridge ferry at 7am, departing the dock at 8am. The ferry takes us across to the South Island, where at Picton we will find our bus. We then cruise through the famous Marlborough vineyard area - with options of wine tasting -, the coastal town of Nelson, and Motueka. We then reach our beautiful overnight stop on the edge of the Abel Tasman National Park, the town of Marahau.

Free activities: Swim, walk, mussel tasting around the fire

Day 14: FREE day in Marahau
You have the entire day free to explore this stunning coastal national park. Whether by land, sea or air, there are tons of fantastic options for getting around.
Accommodation: Unique accommodation on the edge of the national park.
Included Activities: Walk part of the Abel Tasman track and catch an Aqua Taxi home.
Optional Activities: Full day sailing trip, kayaking, skydiving, hang gliding.

Day 15: Marahau to Westport

Today we head south towards the ‘wild’ West Coast passing through Buller Gorge and down a stretch of road that was rated one of the Top 10 drives in the world by Lonely Planet. We stop at Cape Foulwind to visit the seal colony and then head for the historic coal mining town, Westport. The sunset from our accommodation tonight is a must see if the weather is clear!
Accommodation: Charming character villa in the centre of town.

Day 16: Westport to Franz Josef

An early start takes us down the rugged West Coast to the spectacular limestone Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and blowholes. We’ll stop to take a short walk and grab refreshments at the café before we head for the historic gold mining town, Greymouth. We do pick-ups in Greymouth and make a stop in Hokitika before heading to the quaint little town of Franz Josef, home to the mighty Franz Josef Glacier.

Day 17: FREE day in Franz Josef

Enjoy a full free day to explore the glacier. Live your glacier walking dream with a guided tour on the glacier or hike to view it from below, then unwind in the spa pools afterwards.

Day 18: Franz Josef to Wanaka

Today we explore Lake Matheson, take a walk at the amazing mirror lake. After a brief stop at Fox Glacier for pickups we then travel through the mountainous Haast Pass and Makarora. Lots of spots to see out of the window where 'Lord of the Rings' was filmed. We pass by the beautiful Lake Hawea and arrive in Wanaka late afternoon. Wanaka is a small town set on the  Lake Wanaka with beautiful surrounding snow-capped mountains.

Free Activities: Lake Matheson walk, Ship Creek walk, Blue Pools walk, Thundercreek Falls walk, explore Wanaka.

Day 19: Wanaka to Queenstown

This morning we will head out on a guided bike tour around the lake before departing the beautiful lakeside town of Wanaka at 10:30am. We make our way down to the world famous A.J. Hackett bungy site, where the thrill seekers can get their fix! After the morning’s adventures, it’s on to the ‘Adventure Capital of the World,’ Queenstown. Queenstown has many restaurants, pubs, and lots of live music that can all equate to a memorable night out.

Days 20, 21 & 22 – Queenstown

We have three full days to enjoy Queenstown as there is so much to see and do in this adventurous town. To start the activities rolling there are a few included activities – the exhilarating Shotover Jet Boat ride in the morning of day 17. Day 18 will bring us a full day trip to the amazing Doubtful Sound. Day 19 is free for you to explore the many activities left in Queenstown. Wine tasting, hot air ballooning, nature walks, and museums are just a few things that Queenstown offers to keep you busy.
Accommodation: Central hostel in Queenstown
Included Activities: Shotover Jet (Day 17) and Doubtful Sound day trip (Day 18)
Optional Activities: Any adventure activity that we mad Kiwis can dream up bungy, swing, jetboating, skydiving, mountain biking, zipline, horse riding or a day tour to Milford Sound.
Free Activities: Sleep in, great walks, take in beautiful views from this cool resort town.

Day 23: Queenstown to Aoraki/Mt Cook

Departing from Queenstown at 8.40am, we head over the Lindis Pass, and through the beautiful Mackenzie Country. We continue past Lake Pukaki and then head north. Our amazing stop tonight is at the base of New Zealand’s highest mountain Aoraki/Mt Cook. We will arrive early afternoon, so you have the rest of the day to take in the scenery and capture all those pictures that will make your friends jealous.

Optional Activities: Visit the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre
Free Activities: Take photos of awe-inspiring scenery, do one of the many great short walks to the Hooker Glacial Lake

Day 24: Mt Cook to Rangitata

We depart Mt Cook at 10am, and make our way through to Rangitata, where we see the famous ‘Lord of the Rings’ landscapes. We make our way to the beautiful, turquoise Lake Tekapo where you have the opportunity to ice-skate, go snow tubing, or relax and have a swim in the hot springs. We will arrive in Geraldine for a brief stop in the early afternoon and then on to our night in Rangitata, at one of Canterbury’s original sheep stations.
Accommodation: One of Canterbury’s original sheep stations
Optional Activities: Horse ride through Peel Forest.
Free Activities: Take photos of stunning scenery, go for a walk.

Day 25: Rangitata to Kaikoura

Departing from Rangitata at 7.30am, we travel across the Canterbury Plains towards Christchurch, and arrive at the Christchurch International Airport at around 9:40am. After making a few drop offs and pick ups, we will depart from the beautiful Christchurch and have a scenic drive along the coast to Kaikoura. This afternoon is yours to spend at your leisure doing one of the numerous free activities, and exploring the area for it’s amazing marine wildlife.
Accommodation: Warm modern hostel
Optional Activities: Whale watching, swimming with seals, piloting your own plane or swimming with dolphins. Try the amazing fresh fish and chips!
Free activities: Walk around the peninsula and up to the lookout.

Day 26: Kaikoura to Wellington

This morning we depart at 8:30 am, and wind our way up the rocky coastline, with stops for photos when we visit another seal colony. Then we take the ferry crossing over the Cook Strait, to spend our last night back in Wellington. Chat with everyone and reminisce about your favourite parts of the holiday, and have a relaxing last night before our early departure tomorrow morning.

Day 27: Wellington north (via Taupo) to Auckland
