Visit Doubtful Sound
Doubtful Sound lies deep within Fiordland National Park in the South island of New Zealand. The Sound is created by the ocean rising to flood glacially-carved valleys.
In 1770, Captain Cook didn't enter the Sound since he was 'doubtful' he could make it back out to sea under sail. Whalers and sealers later picked up on his description of the area and this common name stuck.
The Sound is home to sea birds, penguins and seals and whales and dolphins periodically venture into its unusual mix of freshwater on the top 2-10 metres and sea water below. The steep and rugged sides of the Sound are covered in dense temperate rainforest making the area difficult to access except by boat. The area has thus remained isolated and largely untouched by human interaction, preserving this remarkable eco-system.
