Rotorua is both the geothermal and Maori cultural centre of New Zealand. Indeed, it's the best place in New Zealand to soak in a natural hot pool by day and then enjoy a maori cultural performance by night.
The town is situated on Lake Rotorua, overlooked by Mt Ngongotaha, which creates a grand setting. Rotorua led the early New Zealand tourism industry when travellers first came here to visit the Pink and White terraces in the 19th century. These were unfortunately destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1886.
Rotorua is in the central North Island of New Zealand, about three hours drive south of Auckland and six hours north of Wellington.
