Opononi in the North Island
Opononi is located on the shore of Hokianga Harbour on the west coast of the Northland region of New Zealand. It doesn't get the attention of the Bay Of Islands on the east coast. That's a shame because anyone visiting here quickly realises what a special place it is.
The Hokianga Harbour is a sheltered area with headlands prominently built out of sand dunes. As the harbour reaches inland bushland and settlements increase. It's a place early Europeans and Maori traded at in the early days. The forests around the harbour were a source of timber, the giant Kauri trees were especially prized. It remains a culturally rich area, something you will experience when visiting.
The Opononi township is low-rise in scale which adds to the charm with accommodation and shops stretching along the main road on the side of the harbour. There's no obstacle stopping you wandering out of your room and onto the shores of the harbour.

This is the perfect pass for those wanting to get out of Auckland and head out to the Bay Of Islands on a 2 day trip. Even better is to get off in Paihia for a few days to fully experience this region and then return to Auckland. If you only take 2 days you'll still have time to see huge kauri trees, snorkel at a marine reserve and go to a native bird recovery centre.
