Kaikoura is in the South Island
Kaikoura is situated on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand, about an hour and a half drive from Christchurch. This small town is well known for the whale watching trips you can take out into the ocean.
Kaikoura has become one of the best places in the world to see whales breaching year around. The whales are always present, with greater numbers at certain times of the year, because the combination of ocean currents and the drop off into deeper waters so close to the shore means food is plentiful for the whales and you don't need to travel too far offshore to see them.
Swimming with dolphins and seal trips are also available from Kaikoura. It's also a great place to taste fresh New Zealand seafood.
Discover the mountains, lakes and sheer beauty of the stunning South Island visiting icons including Queenstown, Marlborough wine region, Abel Tasman, Franz Josef, Doubtful Sound and Mt Cook - just to name a few.
