Bay Of Islands
The Bay Of Islands are located in the sub-tropical coastal region north of Auckland, on the North island of New Zealand. The area is is of historical importance as well as one of significant beauty.
This is New Zealand’s Whitsundays. 144 islands enclosed in a protected bay, only one of these can be stayed on, that is Urupukapuka (Uroo pukka pukka). This area is home to a great amount of marine life including hundreds of bottle nosed dolphins and often gets visits from Orcas.
The Bay of Islands was where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed between a selection of maori Chiefs and the British Crown at a place called Waitangi in 1840. Every year on February 6th NZ celebrates Waitangi Day.
From the main town of Paihia you can embark of day trips out to see the islands in the bay. One of the trips includes travel by boat through what's known as the 'hole in the rock'. There are protected marine and fishing reserves aswell as two shipwrecks The Canterbury and The rainbow Warrior for divers.
